Course Report: September 2021

Course Report: September 2021

We are now almost a third of the way through Spring however one would think we are still in the middle of Winter with the recent weather we have been encountering. We have received 93mm of rain for the month of September to date and 628mm year to date.

19th hole / short game facility: With the Super 6 event being pushed back to December we are going to take the opportunity to complete the construction of the teeing area. This will involve irrigation installation, final shaping of the area, turfing and seeding works. Turf will be sourced from the practise fairway. Existing pipe work and underground services are currently being located prior to trenching works commencing.

New 11th tee: Is now complete. A clay base was laid and shaped, additional irrigation installed, sand capping and shaping, laser levelling and grassing then carried out.

18th tee: Re-seeding of this tee is now complete and we are mowing this area in conjunction with our weekly surrounds mowing as previously done.

Greens tees & surrounds: We are continuing with our 4 – 6 week application intervals of fertiliser and fungicides to all the above mentioned. Current cutting heights of greens is 2.5mm, tees and surrounds range from 6 – 13 mm depending on selected areas. Monthly Verti – draining is still being carried out followed up by an application of a water penetrant.

Fairways: The majority of fairways are showing good signs as they come out of Winter dormancy. Once daytime temperatures stay around 18 degrees and above we should see a much better response from the couch grass. We are applying Pre – emergent herbicides at 6 week intervals for the control of any broadleaf weed germination. We have also purchased a slow release fertiliser to apply to all fairways nearer to the Super 6 event that gives a 12 week release of nutrition. Cutting height will be 13mm.

Tree works: Has been completed for the time being. The main areas were the LHS of the 1st, RHS of the 4th, RHS of the 5th, LH and RHS of the 8th, LH and RHS of the 9th and LHS of the 10th fairways. Root pruning was also carried out on the majority of these areas. There are several larges stumps to be removed as a result of these works. Stump removal works should be completed week ending 8/10/21 weather depending.

Turfing and seeding works: Selected fairway areas have been re-turfed and areas in the rough re-seeded. Areas are as follows, RHS of the first, LH and RHS of the 8th, LH and RHS 10th and RHS 17th approach. The rough on the RHS of the 8th were re-seeded.

Dams and irrigation: All dams are currently at capacity prior to the Summer months. Works on the suction line have been completed and is back in place, the replacement of pump drives and a major service and repair has been carried out. Lifting of all green side sprinklers and selected valve boxes is now complete. Aesthetically this is an improvement and ensures consistent sprinkler coverage when in operation.

Par 3 tees: All Par 3 tees have these signs alongside the tee markers. We ask that all golfers take the time and make an effort to repair their divot if one taken plus one other to help the recovery of these areas.

OH&S: We are working through a list of points to address in relation to the audit undertaken with Premier Safety. All points should be completed by years end.

Rescheduled: The Gippsland Super 6 Event

Rescheduled: The Gippsland Super 6 Event

Quality of Gippsland Super 6 safeguarded as event rescheduled

The Gippsland Super 6 has been rescheduled to 16–19 December 2021, to ensure the event can go ahead with the highest-quality field possible. The PGA Tour have released the following statement about the decision to reschedule the event:

“The PGA Tour of Australasia has reshuffled the entire 2021-22 summer golf schedule, as border closures necessitate the shift of tournaments originally slated for October and November.

“It is important we give the event the best chance to proceed with our full membership able to compete, and with the best possible field,” said Nick Dastey, PGA of Australia Tournaments Director – Australasia.

“This magnificent tournament format has proven immensely popular, and we want to showcase it with the country’s best players at our new home at Warragul Country Club.

“It has become increasingly obvious in recent weeks, with the current lockdowns and restrictions across the country, that we need some extra time to achieve this outcome.”

The new date means the Gippsland Super 6 remains a full Order of Merit Tournament, with its own place on a crowded and condensed Australian golf calendar.

Hosting the Gippsland Super 6 for the first time in 2021, the Warragul Country Club is pleased the tournament can go ahead in its full capacity.

“The Club is proud to be host venue for the Super 6 and we look forward to partnering with the PGA to deliver this showcase event for our members and our local community,” said Kaye Rollinson, Chairperson at Warragul Country Club.

Moving the event further into the summer holiday period also gives the event an opportunity to host activities that will attract and engage holidaying visitors and locals alike.

“Being so close to Christmas gives us the chance to incorporate Christmas themed activities around Tournament week, especially on the Family Day on Sunday 19 December,” said Dastey.

The Gippsland Super 6 is golf tournament comprising three rounds of ordinary stroke play, before a day three cut reduces the field of 126 competitors to a top 24. The top 24 then competes in a final-day six-hole match play format to determine a champion.

Headlining the field will be defending champion Marcus Fraser, a who has multiple wins on the European and Asian Tours along with representing Australia at the 2016 Rio Olympics.”
